Abstract Outline (rough draft)

The main goal of this paper is to analyze and compare different types of intersections found in today's roads. The resulting information and data will be incorporated into a hybrid design. The new design will take the most desirable aspects of each intersection to produce a superior one. As urban growth continues the need for new infrastructure is always ongoing. Signaled intersections require a continuous stream of electricity and have increased danger in comparison to roundabouts. This paper will explore the possibility of solar powered traffic lights and a roundabout design the population will not view negatively.

  1. Hey Cam, This sounds like a wicked topic idea. Besides the solar powered traffic lights what else do you intend to research? Are you also thinking of the possibility of designing a new type of intersection with all green features, such as landscaping with irrigation etc?

A good person to talk to would be Karri Loadman, she seems to have a good understanding and knowledge about what types of highway systems work and don't work! Good luck on the new topic!!

  3. This is a very rough outline, but of even more concern is the fact that this topic has already been covered. See: http://kamloopsroundabout.blogspot.com/
I think Kari's idea of looking at how to green intersections is a good one. This way you can incorporate roundabouts if appropriate, but you are not limited to this.
Also, I would recommend that you look at a specific intersection or series of intersections on one street as this will help to further focus your research.
